The Icelandic fusion group Mezzoforte was formed in 1977 in Reykjavik by four teenage musicians who shared a musical interest in hard rock, jazz rock, and funk. Their first five years together were an intense developmental phase that resulted in three albums, recordings where they reportedly experimented and worked hard to become skilled with their instruments; the first album, "Mezzoforte," was released in 1979. The fourth album was recorded in London; with "Surprise Surprise," they achieved their major international breakthrough. One of the tracks was band member Eythor Gunnarsson's "Garden Party," which became a hit single in 1983.
