Mattias Nilsson is one of Sweden’s innovative jazz pianists in a tradition that began with Jan Johansson and Bengt Hallberg. He is celebrated, both as a pianist and as a composer, for his musical breadth, his sensitivity and his personal expression. In this solo concert in the beautiful 13th-century St. Mary’s Church, Mattias Nilsson offers “a dynamic mix of Swedish jazz, folk music and improvisation”. Original compositions are linked with influences from Brazilian and Argentinean music and tributes to some of the greatest in Swedish jazz. The old church room contributes to the magic of the concert: “Playing in a church always gives a special feeling – the room itself becomes part of the music, and the acoustics create a presence that is difficult to find anywhere else,” says Mattias Nilsson.
