Lunch show
Here comes the last chance to go on a guided tour of the public exhibition of James Barnor: Transmissions, together with the curator of Ystad Konstmuseum.
NOTE! James Barnor: Transmissions is located in Bollen at Jennygatan 6, Ystad, but the meeting point for the lunch viewing is Ystad Konstmuseum's reception at Sankt Knuts torg.
Black Archives Sweden is pleased to present James Barnor: Transmissions, an
exhibition displayed in public space that celebrates the groundbreaking work of Ghanaian photographer James Barnor. The exhibition is the first large-scale presentation of Barnor's extensive photographic archive in Sweden. The exhibition spreads across several locations in
Skåne and emphasizes Barnor's influential role in capturing emerging stories from the
African continent and the Black diaspora. Makda Embaie's newly written poem "I Remember You All" is inspired by Barnor's photographs and follows the exhibition through Skåne.
The exhibition is based on Black Archives Sweden's collection Familjearkivet, which aims to preserve the lives of the diaspora through experimentation, care and collective activation. Familjearkivet highlights aspects of Black history and the present that are often overlooked by public archives. James Barnor's career spans six decades and his photographs provide important insight into the extensive social changes of the post-war period. Born in 1929, Barnor became Ghana's first newspaper photographer, documenting the country's political and social changes before independence. In 1959, he moved to London, where he captured the dynamic lives and cultures that people of African descent created in Britain. His photographs were published in Drum, a Black lifestyle magazine founded in South Africa in 1951 and which played a crucial role in the anti-apartheid movement. His photographs from that period provide a rare insight into both the mundane and the remarkable aspects of life in the diaspora, creating an invaluable visual documentation of the shifting identities of diverse African communities. Through his lens, Barnor has recorded societies in flux, and his work remains a powerful archive of postcolonial histories. More than a photographer, Barnor is a storyteller who engages audiences with reflections on identity, migration, and belonging in an increasingly interconnected world. In recent years, his work has gained significant international recognition for its thought-provoking portrayal of a critical time in the 20th century. James Barnor: Transmissions invites viewers to explore his incredible journey and delve into the complex narrative of life in the Black diaspora, offering a perspective on modern history that has often been overlooked.
