Lecture with Bonnie Clementsson
How did Swedish thieves and swindlers think 200 years ago? What kind of society did they grow up in, why did they choose a criminal path, and what was life like behind the scenes in the jails and prisons of the time? Historian Bonnie Clementsson, based at Lund University, shares insights from her book Imprisoned Fates: Thieves and Swindlers in 19th-Century Sweden. The book is based on seventeen autobiographies written by convicts at Carlsten Fortress and was nominated for the 2024 August Prize in the category of Best Non-Fiction Book of the Year.
