Birds and animals in folklore
Local folklore mentions both wild birds and animals. Join cultural historian Lena Alebo on a short walk with three short lectures about birds and animals in the forest, by the house and in the pasture.
There are creepy stories about the wolf and the eel that have been passed down from generation to generation. But around the mountain there have also been dragons, glossos, grass wolves, brook horses, milk hares and round snakes. All of which are rarer today.
Throughout history, people have listened expectantly to the cuckoo's ko-ko in the spring. People have taken omens and pondered the arrival of birds in the spring and their disappearance in the autumn.
There were birds that were believed to predict war, rain, crop failures and livestock deaths. And how is it – are we completely free from what would be called a scarecrow today. How many children will I have? The eastern cuckoo is a comforting cuckoo, the southern cuckoo is a death cuckoo.
