Princess of Czardas

Chamber Opera Syd turns 10 - and celebrates this by putting on one of the world's most played operettas, Czardasfurstinna by Emmerich Kálmán. This will be a historic production, as the operetta has not been staged in any major Scanian production since the 1980s and in Stockholm not since the 1950s.

The text for Czardasfurstinnan is as usual newly written by Rickard Söderberg, who is also on stage together with his pair horse Marianne Mörck. At the premiere, Marianne marks 50 years since she made her very first Czardasfurstinnan – a milestone in Swedish operetta history. This unique combination of tradition and innovation reflects Kammaropera Syd's role as a leading force in the art of operetta in the Nordics.

The production offers both laughter and depth, with a unique mix of farce and seriousness where the lyrics always have a contemporary anchor. Humor and unexpected twists settle like laughter in the throat when the poem meets reality.

In the ensemble we see some of Sweden's most distinguished opera singers, including Carolina Sandgren, Susanne Resmark, Anton Ljungqvist and Elisabeth Jansson - together with an orchestra consisting of musicians from both the Nordics' leading orchestras and the legendary Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of conductor Jonas Samuelsson. With rave reviews and sold-out salons with queues outside the theater to get cancellations, KammarOperaSyd at Ystads Teater shows that the interest in, and the love for, operetta is greater than ever.

The new production premieres at Ystads Theater on July 4, 2024 and runs until July 13.
