Ann Rosén at Ystad Art Museum
RECYCLING THE WORK PROCESS
A composition by Ann Rosén
Recycling the Work Process is a musical composition in three movements. In it, Ann Rosén has based her own artistic work between 1981 and 2023. Each movement has its own subtitle and represents a period in Rosén's professional life as an artist: Resilient Material, Stagings and Silences & Sound.
The score itself, the sheet music, is drawn in pencil. Graphic notation is when composers use visual symbols other than traditional notes. Rosén's symbols stand for things she has explored in her artistic work and for the different directions the work has taken over the years. The piece of music can be performed with one or more instruments.
Ann Rosén was born in 1956 in Hörnefors outside Umeå. Today she lives and works in Östra Hoby in southeastern Skåne. There, together with Sten-Olof Hellström, she runs shhhh…, a platform for experimental music and sound art. Rosén was educated at Konstfack in Stockholm and has been exploring interpersonal communication since the 1980s. Since the 1990s, she has primarily worked with music and sound art. Her works have been performed on stages such as the Royal Swedish Opera and Moderna Museet in Stockholm and the Southbank Centre in London.
Recycling the Work Process was acquired for the Ystad Art Museum's collection in 2024. The score will be performed live by musicians on at least one occasion during the exhibition period.
The collection was founded by the Ystad Art Society even before the museum building was inaugurated. At the inauguration in 1936, the society donated around twenty works that became the foundation of the collection that has continued to grow since then. The selection principles have varied over time, but today Ystad Art Museum mainly collects art related to Skåne. The collection dates back to the late 19th century, but primarily includes art from the 20th century to the present day.
Ystad Art Museum considers the citizens' art collection as a reservoir of artistic ideas and an art historical resource that also documents contemporary art movements for the future.
