The play depicts the final years of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's life, which were marked by Antonio Salieri, an older composer driven by a destructive jealousy and unable to bear witnessing Mozart's uninhibited and natural genius.
It is a dizzying confrontation with the darkness of shame and guilt, where mediocrity ultimately "wins," leading to its own relentless downfall. The play swirls forward with a driven storytelling joy full of contrasts, vitality, love, infidelity, creativity, and pitch-black darkness.
The stage at Skillinge Theater is filled with dazzling and evocative music, people in motion, unexpected events, and masque-inspired choreography, promising an Amadeus unlike any you've seen before.
