Lunch show
Viewing Friday 6 June at 12.30 of "Skånska dragooner rida till bad"
Collection in the art museum reception.
The original title of Oscar Matthiesen's painting is "Skaanské dragooner rida till bad". Matthiesen, who lived from 1861 to 1957, got the idea for the motif during a holiday in Ystad in 1904. At this time, Ystad housed Europe's largest combined cavalry regiment, which left a great mark on the city. Matthiesen says he was inspired by the young soldiers, the sun, the salt water and the strong bodies of both animals and people.
As a result of industrialism and urbanization, there was a tendency at the beginning of the 20th century to reconnect with nature. This tendency constitutes a separate movement within the Nordic history of ideas and art: vitalism.
