Rhoda Scott & Sisters in Jazz
The Jazz Festival's opening concert is a performance with one of the world's foremost Hammond organists: the legendary Rhoda Scott. In the world of soul and jazz, she has made herself known as a virtuoso with an unmistakable sound – bright and energetic, swinging and beautifully bluesy.
Rhoda Scott was born in Dorothy in New Jersey, USA. Her musical path began in the church – her father was a pastor – where she gave vent to her talent as an accompanist for gospel choirs. Her talent was discovered by none other than Count Basie who invited her to play at his club in Harlem. In 1967 she moved to France to study music. France eventually and for over forty years became her homeland. Today she lives in Le Mans.
Rhoda Scott has played with greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles and George Benson. Over the years, she has also made many recordings, from the debut album "Hey! Hey! Hey!” (1962) to the last released record "Rhoda Scott Lady All Stars" (2021). Rhoda Scott is often called "The Barefoot Lady" or, in her home country, "L'organiste aux pieds nus" - the barefoot organist.
At the jazz festival's opening concert, Rhoda Scott is joined by Izabella Effenberg on vibraphone and glass harp and Julie Saury on drums – Sisters in Jazz.
Izabella Effenberg has released three albums under her own name. In addition to the vibraphone, she plays several unusual instruments, such as the glass harp, which we hear here.
Julie Saury, a member of the Rhoda Scott Lady Quartet since 2004, is a prominent French drummer.
