Macross
The Swedish jazz quartet Makross was formed in Malmö in 2010. A "love child", according to the band members' own description; in Makross they express their love for music and jazz. The common thread in their music is twisted by the American jazz tradition - some influences are Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Lee Konitz and Steve Lehman - and "a Swedish tradition of strong melodies". It means swinging music, melodic and soulful, in playful performances. Makross' live performances, characterized by this playfulness and joy, are well-known mood boosters.
In the quartet there are no less than two saxophones, which together with bass and drums create an original sound.
Since 2011, Makross has done several tours in Europe and collaborated with some of Scandinavia's leading jazz musicians. The group has released four albums with original compositions "It's not so easy (2012), "Kapitel 2 - vilän lykka" (2015), "We Are Swedish Jazz Group" (2017) and "Soppatorsk" (2022).
"There are no signs that the fuel is about to run out, no risk of engine failure can be foreseen," Bo Bjelvehammar begins his review of Makross' latest album in the cultural magazine Opulens. He further states that the common thread runs through the band's arrangements and performances, but emphatically emphasizes that "they have a personal, independent style". He concludes: "The energy and joy of playing is contagious, it's entertaining. Words like swing and spreader of joy are appropriate!” (opulens.se 15/6 2022)
