Gustav Vasa - a princess among princes
He was the nobleman who became king, the Catholic who became Protestant and the one who laid the foundations of modern Sweden. Posterity knows him as Gustav Vasa, even though he himself never called himself anything other than Gustav Eriksson.
His life was filled with drama from cradle to grave. War, rebellion and a constant quest to be accepted as the ruler of one's surroundings. Through various types of propaganda, he managed to create an image of himself that has survived well into our own time. How did he manage to stay in power? What role did he play in the creation of modern Sweden? These are some of the themes to be covered in today's lecture about perhaps the most famous of our kings.
