Writer's evening with Nina van den Brink
Nina van den Brink talks about her August award-winning book "I've wiped enough floors: a biography of Maja Ekelöf"
In 1970, an unknown 52-year-old cleaning lady wins Rabén & Sjögren's major novel competition with Rapport fra en skurhink, a diary from a hard low-wage everyday life. Maja Ekelöf gets to come to Stockholm and receive the award, and overnight the cleaner and mother of five from Karlskoga has become a national celebrity. Suddenly she is part of Sweden's politically engaged cultural establishment. I have mopped enough floors is a story of an extraordinary woman, a document of the politically charged cultural life of the 1970s, and a poignant reminder of how society still views women in low-wage occupations. For all the progress, all the development in spite of - how is it that so many low-paid women got worse and not better?
