Photographer Mikael Cronwall has documented more than 400 locally initiated monuments around Sweden in 2020-2023. These monuments have not been built by the state or municipality, but have been created by people who live in the place – often through associations, enthusiasts or local companies. They are locally initiated monuments.

“My images show what is important to the local community and tell about its history, culture and identity,” says Mikael Cronwall.

Around thirty of the images in the project are on display at Österlens Fotograficinum.
