Freebird Opera presents “The Long Century” - a newly written chamber opera in two acts with music by the internationally acclaimed composer Andrea Tarrodi. Libretto and direction by Malmö-based director and playwright Helena Röhr. World premiere in Malmö on October 13, 2023. Guest performance at Ystad Theater on November 10, 2023.

In “The Long Century,” we follow the protagonist Vita on her journey through 100 years of a changing Sweden. From the time Swedish women gained the right to vote in 1921, to the uncertain present and future opportunities. The dreamlike journey in many forms is portrayed by five opera singers and five musicians in a poetic, sung journey. It is a story about a woman who represents many women: those whose work has carried Sweden forward as a nation and society, while they have carried themselves through sorrow and love, work, celebration, and struggle.

The performance is made with the support of the Swedish Arts Council, Region Skåne, the City of Malmö, the Swedish Authors’ Fund, the Helge Ax:son Johnson Foundation, Music in the South, and the Municipality of Ystad.
